MCRC Recieves $125,000 from Ontario to Support Expansion of ‘She Can!” Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

$125,700 OTF Grant from the Ontario Government Gives Milton Community Program a Lift

Milton, ON – On Monday, MPP Zee Hamid met with the team at Milton Community Resource Centre (MCRC) to hear more about the $125,700 Grow grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) that was used to expand the SheCan! Program, free programming that works to build confidence in girls and gender diverse youth. Over the next 2 years, She Can! will support more youth in Milton to develop stronger social, emotional and leadership skills.

“I’m proud to see the Ontario Trillium Foundation continuing to support impactful programs like She Can! through this $125,700 Grow Grant,” said Zee Hamid, MPP for Milton. “This grant will make an impactful difference for girls and gender-diverse youth by expanding opportunities to build confidence, leadership, and lifelong skills. Thank you OTF and the Milton Community Resource Centre for your commitment to strengthen our community and empower our next generation.”

She Can! programs empower girls and gender-diverse youth through girl-centered initiatives offered in schools across Halton Region and at our Milton location. To date, MCRC has had 35 schools participate, reaching 1,300 participants. They also provide two free sports programs: She Can Play! with MLSE Foundation and Girls at Bat with Jays Care. The Grow Grant will help MCRC expand into more schools and introduce 15 new after-school programs for grades 2–6, plus 9 evening community programs. Summer offerings will include 3 additional core programs and expanded Girls at Bat participation.

One She Can! Participant’s statement nicely outlines the program's goals: “She Can! makes me feel like I can do big things and make a difference. I can be who I am and I should be proud and confident in who I am.”

MCRC’s mission is to empower all citizens of Milton and Halton’s diverse community by providing programs and supports that are high quality, inclusive, accessible, and affordable, aimed to address the impacts of poverty and inequity.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Ontario government with a mission to build healthy and vibrant communities across the province. Last year, OTF invested nearly $105M into 732 community projects and multi-sector partnerships. Projects aim to enhance economic well-being, foster more active lifestyles, support child and youth development, provide spaces for people to come together and connect, and create a more sustainable environment.
